Internet users are becoming more aware of their digital footprint; 47% have searched for information about themselves online, up from just 22% five years ago. However, few monitor their online presence with great regularity. Just 3% of self-searchers report that they make a regular habit of it and 74% have checked up on their digital footprints only once or twice.

''Web 2.0'' has become a catch-all buzzword that people use to describe a wide range of interactive online activities and applications, some of which the Pew Internet & American Life Project regularly tracks. Rainie brings the latest statistics and findings, and talks about current trends in Web participation. The Project has developed an extensive typology of internet users who range from fanatic content contributors to irritated sufferers from information overload. He will discuss the implications of different user types on the activities and services of libraries.

Mr. Keen begins: So what, exactly, is Web 2.0? It is the radical democratization of media which is enabling anyone to publish anything on the Internet. Mainstream media's traditional audience has become Web 2.0's empowered author. Web 2.0 transforms all of us -- from 90-year-old grandmothers to eight-year-old third graders -- into digital writers, music artists, movie makers and journalists. Web 2.0 is YouTube, the blogosphere, Wikipedia, MySpace or Facebook. Web 2.0 is YOU! (Time Magazine's Person of the Year for 2006).

Web 2.0 as a Social Movement点击:27
 分类:web2.0 时间:2007-6-26 10:08:22 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
The current discussions on Web 2.0 development represent a significant development in the continuing interaction of technological developments and communications rights. In this paper the social movement for a right to communicate and the discourse surrounding Web 2.0 development are compared to demonstrate how Web 2.0 is a manifestation of an ongoing interaction between this human rights social movement and communication technology. The values associated with Web 2.0, especially the participative role of users, are congruent with those expressed in the movement to achieve a right to communicate. The paper concludes with a discussion on how a right to communicate serves as a conceptual framework for addressing a range of public policy issues arising out of the increasing use of the World Wide Web and as a framework for Web research and development.

These bloggers feel strongly about the issues, and I follow them because they often write useful and thought-provoking things (which I sometimes agree with and sometimes not), and just as often, are simply fun to read. But presumably, the speaker at the NASIG conference also feels strongly about what he was saying (as does Gorman). From the reports, it seems likely that I’d disagree with him vociferously, but I don’t have any grounds for questioning his sincerity or his passion for his beliefs. And yet, it seems that in the minds of some, it’s unfair and petty to go after one of Jane’s posts, but it’s perfectly fine and reasonable to question Gorman’s sanity, ethics, emotional stability and hairstyle(!) Why is that?

My favorite conversation last year at Gnomedex was when one of the side discussions got into defining what was and was not Web 2.0. No one had a definition and everyone had agreed it was pretty just a marketing slogan. I think I got the biggest laugh when I said, “When I think of Web 2.0, I think of rounded corners.” So I might have to disagree with David…

Gorman Forgets to Wind the Clock点击:46

Michael Gorman is blogging (ahem) for Britannica (cough, cough) on the subject of what’s wrong with web 2.0. In two parts, he raises the usual issues: information online is too inclusive, playful, and … digital. Printed texts have authenticity and fixity, whereas texts that are digital may not be what they appear. I’m guessing Gorman hasn’t read Tristram Shandy lately.

The main point where I disagree with Gorman is his idea that the expert is necessarily to be trusted. How many things have now been disproved that were once seen as scientific fact? How many scientific studies get published where it’s found that the data was fudged? In the sciences, it’s much easier to gauge the truth of something when all of the evidence is present. In most of the hard sciences, scientific observation leads to the truth. While our understanding of things may change, it’s usually because science has come up with better ways of observing nature. But even in the hard sciences, the truths we hold to be evident at one point are sometimes proven false upon later examination. Look at how forensic science has changed. Things that we once thought proved guilt or innocence (such as microscopic hair comparison) are now shown to be completely faulty in light of DNA analysis. Reality changes over time. Even so, science is not as open to interpretation as the social sciences.

Boing Boing: Michael Gorman's anti-Internet rant点击:42

Britannica will tell you that they don’t want to compete on universality of access or sharability, but this is the lament of the scribe who thinks that writing fast shouldn’t be part of the test. In a world where copies have become cost-free, people who expend their resources to prevent access or sharing are forgoing the principal advantages of the new tools, and this dilemma is common to every institution modeled on the scarcity and fragility of physical copies. Academic libraries, which in earlier days provided a service, have outsourced themselves as bouncers to publishers like Reed-Elsevier; their principal job, in the digital realm, is to prevent interested readers from gaining access to scholarly material

Web 2.0: The Sleep of Reason, Part II - Britannica Blog点击:57

Digital Maoism is an unholy brew made up of the digital utopianism that hailed the Internet as the second coming of Haight-Ashbury—everyone’s tripping and it’s all free; pop sociology derived from misreading books such as James Surowiecki’s 2004 The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many are Smarter Than the Few and How Collective Wisdom Shapes Business, Economies, Societies, and Nations; a desire to avoid individual responsibility; anti-intellectualism—the common disdain for pointy headed professors; and the corporatist “team” mentality that infests much modern management theory. Consider, for example, the computer company’s TV advertisement that shows a tweedy professor trying to explain the difficulties of publishing and being deflated by a student who explains that, because of computers, everything can be published and we are all authors now.

The life of the mind in the age of Web 2.0 suffers, in many ways, from an increase in credulity and an associated flight from expertise. Bloggers are called “citizen journalists”; alternatives to Western medicine are increasingly popular, though we can thank our stars there is no discernable “citizen surgeon” movement; millions of Americans are believers in Biblical inerrancy—the belief that every word in the Bible is both true and the literal word of God, something that, among other things, pits faith against carbon dating; and, scientific truths on such matters as medical research, accepted by all mainstream scientists, are rejected by substantial numbers of citizens and many in politics.

Online radio station Last.fm is adding a video section to its site this week, enabling users to create their own personalised video channels - similar to how users can already create radio stations based on their music tastes. Last.fm is partnering with major and independent labels for this. The company also claims that the quality of videos on its site "will be significantly higher than that of YouTube", with audio encoded at 128kbps compared to YouTube’s 64kbps.

Controversy about our "Web 2.0" service mark 点击:47

O'Reilly and CMP co-produce the Web 2.0 conference. "Web 2.0" was coined when we were brainstorming the concept for the first conference in 2003. As noted in the letter to IT@Cork (sent from CMP's attorney, but with our knowledge and agreement), "CMP has a pending application for registration of Web 2.0 as a service mark, for arranging and conducting live events, namely trade shows, expositions, business conferences and educational conferences in various fields of computers and information technology." To protect the brand we've established with our two Web 2.0 Conferences, we're taking steps to register "Web 2.0" as our service mark, for conferences. It's a pretty standard business practice. Just as O'Reilly couldn't decide to launch a LinuxWorld conference, other event producers can't use "Web 2.0 Conference," the name of our event. In this case, the problem is that it@cork's conference title includes our service mark "Web 2.0," which the law says we must take "reasonable steps" to protect. We've also contacted another group that has announced a "Web 2.0 Conference" in Washington, DC this September.
