Annotated list of things not to forget (in the 2.0 craze)…点击:38

I’ve been brainstorming about some essential facets of librarianship - skills, roles, services, problems - that while they have not lost any relevance have lately been ignored, passed over, forgotten, swept under the rug, or declared obsolete and old-fashioned by the vocal minority of librarians whose main concern now seems to be to create a new librarianship that is not saddled with the old baggage. I will say, editorially, that I think much of the energy behind Library 2.0 springs from insecurity about the usefulness of what we do as librarians and insecurity about the seriousness of the knowledge base that it involves (a problem that may derive in part from a decline in standards in library education).

30 Library Technology Predictions for 2008点击:25
 分类:library2.0 时间:2008-1-5 12:29:52 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
1. There will be some Internet speed and congestion issues in 2008 on a scale that hit AOL in the early days. There will be hand-wringing blog posts and I-told-you-so stories in the MSM.
2. Facebook will suffer some wonkiness in '08 but will grow rapidly through acquisition and business partnerships. The F8 platform initiative will do better in 08 than the Google OpenSocial initiative but OpenSocial will win out in the end. Ads will survive and all the chest beating will have the same effect that it had when the web went commercial. Watch for financial, global, mobile, multilingual, and other niche stuff from MySpace.

`All That Glisters Is Not Gold' Web 2.0 And The Librarian -- Anderson 39 (4): 195 -- Journal of Librarianship and Information Science点击:32
 分类:library2.0 时间:2008-1-4 9:21:02 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
Web 2.0 and social media applications such as blogs, wikis and social networking sites offer the promise of a more vibrant, social and participatory Internet. There is a growing interest within the library community in debating the potential impact that such services might have within libraries and such debates have gathered around the moniker of `Library 2.0'. To date, however, there has been little theoretical work and there is a need to develop more formal definitions and frameworks. This editorial discusses the origins of the term Web 2.0, provides a structured framework for rationalizing the implications of Web 2.0 services and outlines some of the areas in which librarians are positioned to provide a unique contribution to the further development of such services.

Libraries and social networking点击:21

In June 2007, the world’s top three social networking sites—YouTube, MySpace and Facebook—attracted more than 350 million people to their Web sites, according to comScore. And each time they visited, users stayed connected for at least an hour and a half; at Facebook the average stay per visit was nearly four hours. With these types of usage statistics, it’s easy to see why social networking is in the news.

I’ve been offline for a while, so I didn’t notice that UC Berkeley put the webcast of my keynote online! WOW! It’s available on YouTube, but you can also download the podcast from UC Berkeley’s site if you’re not into the whole video thing. I’m embedding the YouTube video here. I start talking about 12 or 13 minutes in (there are some introductory remarks from the muckety mucks at UC). I’d love to hear what you think of my ideas — I don’t claim to have all the answers about library 2.0 or how organizations should be structured to get there — or to read your own ideas on these topics. “Library 2.0″ is all about conversation — there’s no RIGHT or WRONG (at least that’s my take).

Are the Users Ahead of Us? (Academic Librarian)点击:29

So is it the case that in either academic or public libraries the users are ahead of the techies? Or are they just ahead of the luddite librarians, if there be such? How wired is the general populace or the average student population? Are they really ahead of us?

I just gave a presentation at the Allegheny County Library Association on Web 2.0 and emerging trends. it was fun! This group of librarians is very lively - during the presentation, there were lots of great questions were asked and there was some fun discussion, too. That type of interaction certainly makes it much easier for me

Top 25 Library Bloggers List the Talk of the Biblioblogosphere - 9/17/2007 - Library Journal点击:50

So who are the 25 most popular library bloggers? Online Education Database (OEDb), an Internet resource for online colleges, continuing education, and distance learning, announced its Top 25 libloggers based on visitor traffic and site backlinks. Predicably, the results have stirred contention and criticism. To calculate the rankings, OEDb tallied each site’s Google PageRank, Alexa Rank, Technorati Authority, and Bloglines subscribers. Among other criteria, a blog had to be listed on the DMOZ open-directory page Library and Information Science: Weblogs; written by a librarian, or listed in the top 200 results for a Google search for “librarian blog.” These metrics narrowed the list to 55 blogs. Nearly half made the final cut.

What’s new about Library 2.0? Shift in power.点击:50

So, if being user centred is not new, and Library 2.0 isn’t only about new tools, what is new about it? Why should we lift our heads from the stuff we are already doing and take notice of it? To me, the new element that Library 2.0 brings to our libraries is a shift in power balance - between us, our users, suppliers, software vendors, non-users.

The results from the MLA Social Networking Survey are available. You can view the summary data as well as the charts and graphs. Don't forget to check out the Task Force Blog for further analysis and discussion of the results.
I happy to say that the hospital librarians put in a good showing, 30% of the respondents were hospital librarians. One other interesting tid bit is that a diverse group of library sizes responded. Both solos and libraries with 2-5 staff represented 19% of the responses each and libraries with 20-40 staff represented 20% of the responses.

Library 2.0 - 10 Ideas for the Library of the Future (and Now)点击:37
 分类:library2.0 时间:2007-9-23 0:27:32 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
I would really like to see libraries bring back this practice. There are so many people who don’t have a car or kids whose parents don’t take them to the library and this is a great asset for them. Alternatively if this isn’t feasible, perhaps libraries could open sub-branches in several locations like stores that mostly just allow people to pickup books that they reserved and return books. They could only be open say once or twice a week for a couple of hours. I think the value of being able to walk to a library outlet is immense.

While some critics will tell you that Library 2.0 is no different from previous service models, others will say that services like Facebook pose a problem largely because of library culture. I concur with the latter view, not because I think Library 2.0 strategies are always better, but because Library 2.0 strategies require librarians to unlearn certain things in order to be truly effective.
