These new online collections have been put together by commercial publishers looking for financial returns, and they don't come cheap. If you are a researcher at one of the plusher universities, you may have had the subscriptions paid on your behalf, in which case you should be deeply grateful; but ordinary citizens working from home will need hundreds of pounds a year to cover their dues to the publishers. If you are like me, however, you will keep your credit card in your wallet and notch up a new justification for your library habit, though you will have to restrict yourself to the small minority that can afford the institutional subscriptions, and you will have to accustom yourself to spending your time at a computer terminal rather than a desk. It may not quite be heaven, but as far as I'm concerned it's not far off.

Library Hard :

Library Garden: Library as Place点击:51
 分类:library 时间:2006-10-17 21:07:08 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
The thriving library of 2010 will have thoroughly considered these questions and be guided by the answers they have discovered. Many NJLA members are probably familiar with Mount Laurel Library's success with their use of retail merchandising techniques. Those techniques were implemented as part of the "Trading Spaces" project. A do-it-yourself kit, replete with documentation, signage, photos, furniture vendor contacts, prices, and more is available at the project website http://www.sjrlc.org/tradingspaces. Taking a look at this resource page is a great place to start if your library is interested in becoming a destination of choice in your community.

Libraries are nonpartisan. We cannot overemphasize this point. We are not unbiased. We are biased towards our communities’ needs. We’re biased towards quality information and safe environments. We are biased to user privacy. We share a common value system that focuses on protecting the record and empowering the user.

Tame The Web: Libraries and Technology: Ten Things I Know About Libraries in 2006 (A Response to "Libraries are Obsolete")点击:31

I hope the folks in Lawrence have a long conversation about the purpose of libraries. I hope they get the library facility and online community the ciitizens want. But before we label libraries as obsolete, inefficient or limited, lets' look at what's possible and not be afraid to make a difference

Don’t expect kids, seniors, and everyone else to trudge downtown for the convenience of librarians. Put information technology at the fingertips of every kid, and every senior in Lawrence. Because low incomes limit the ability of some to connect to high-speed access, even when it’s brought to their door, the city might give low-income families computers on a needs basis. Otherwise, offer reliable Internet access at small 24/7 City of Lawrence Free Internet Cafes (“libraries”) that are broadly distributed for easy walking access by kids and seniors.

I had worked on several different templates for the new version of our website and nothing was working. Then I attended the Web 2.0 seminar led by Michael Stephens and Jenny Levine and took what the speakers said to heart. It really seemed to me that if we started with a Blogger.com format and expanded upon that, we would be able to accomplish what we wanted to do. Namely to be able to give our users news about programming, spotlight our collection and keep them up to date on new additions to our collection. It also dawned upon me that we could utilize Blogger's template structure to organize our website by listing the links to the various pages on our site in the right column and be able to provide an archive etc. It did everything we needed! So, I set to work setting it up, then "adapted" our extant pages to the Blogger template format.

Flickr Libraries = Scary, Scary, Scary to Some Folks点击:49

Please be aware that Flickr is NOT "Yahoo's Flickr adult oriented amateur porn website"—it's a photo-sharing community that offers a way to make connections and have conversations. I've "favorited"images and commented and tagged. And Jenny and I have demonstrated its use all over in the Roadshow. I've flagged images that "may offend" before, and I've advocated that libraries use Flickr as well.

In the popular mind, libraries equal one thing: books. Despite hundreds of glowing articles touting libraries as the destination for audios, videos, DVDs, etc., and despite many, many patrons actually checking out and using nonbook materials through their libraries, as the OCLC report confirms, books are still what patrons associate with libraries.

Should I Become A Librarian?点击:26

My problem is this. Library school would be a big investment of money for us--my wife and I are already working on a decent-sized debt. I don't feel like I'm in a position to spend money/get into further debt for a career that isn't at least reasonably secure and renumerative. In short, I make just under $30K a year now, and I need to make more fairly soon, with prospects for more in the future.

Why Google (or Ask or Yahoo!) is good for reference work点击:50
 分类:reference; library 时间:2006-4-3 14:47:21 youyuan收录 复制到我的网摘
This is why I never buy the whole Google/Ask/Yahoo! is something librarians should avoid using bit. I always start with the databases, but the databases don’t cover every subject well. Sometimes I can find good things in Google/Ask/Yahoo! because I know what I’m looking for. And I know that my search skills will get better as I face more challenges at the reference desk. But honestly, I think most librarians brush up on their search skills when trying to answer difficult reference questions. Any librarian worth his or her salt will learn something new every day that they are on the reference desk. It’s so important to be flexible and not to only try searching the three things you always search and then give up if you can’t find anything. We have to not only be familiar with our own databases, but with how to search-smart on the Web, and which Web sites have useful subject info. I work with a lot of Masters students in diplomacy and criminal justice, and these students often need to use the Web to find a lot of the statistics and government information they use in their research. Our Criminal Justice Abstracts and Criminal Justice Periodicals are good, but they don’t always meet the needs of our students.

So let American publishers sue to find out what "fair use" means. Doubtless the case will go to appeal; by the time it ends they, like music publishers before them, may experience a surge in demand for their books, especially those not readily available in bookshops. If, for example, someone searching on Google on a subject in which they are interested unexpectedly comes across a relevant book, reads a bit and orders a copy, one more book is sold, providing income to publisher and author and revenue for Google from contextual advertising. The search engine has undoubtedly been arrogant in having an opt-out rather than opt-in policy for the authors of the books it has scanned, but there is a strong public interest in bringing the millions of books lying fallow in libraries to the world's attention. A colleague was delighted to find that his copyrighted but out-of-print book was featured on Google Book Search, even though no one had asked his permission. Humankind is the winner.

For those alert enough to be paying attention, the action plan for libraries in the 21st century is simple: change or die. The ironic part is that it's very clear in the broadest sense how we should change and where we should take the lead, but it's like my favorite lightbulb joke: How many therapy patients does it take to change a lightbulb? One, but the lightbulb has to really want to change. If we don't want to change, then it doesn't really matter what we're like in this century, because it will be our last.

Libraries411.com: Maps "Mashup" Combines Public Library Location Info And More with Maps from Yahoo and Google点击:54

Yes, it's a mashup/public library locator from Counting Opinions (SQUIRE) Ltd. This service combines location info (and more) about more than 20,000 public libraries in the US and Canada and then merges the data on to maps from either Google or Yahoo. Search by name, Zip Code or Postal Code. Maps contain location markers. Click on the marker to get precise location info, web url and in some cases hours and library size. Narrow results to central libraries, branch libraries, and/or bookmobiles. Results pages contain no advertising. To switch between Google Maps and Yahoo Maps look for the link near the bottom of the right column.

Rejoicing and Crying over "Upgrading to Library 2.0"点击:41

If I sound frustrated, I guess I'm a bit of a Veruca Salt about what I want to do in my daily work. As much as I love learning about Library and Web 2.0 and finding ways to make technology work for patrons and colleagues, I'm not sure that many (most) libraries are ready to take even the baby steps suggested by Michael. I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm mistaken (and I hope that I am).

Library 2.0: The road ahead点击:40

L2 is not a fad.
Despite what some people may say about L2, it is not a passing fancy bandied about by a few hypertechno-literate librarians. L2 is part of an evolution that is taking place worldwide–a movement in which the threshold between technology and individuality is giving way. Those two seemingly disparate concepts are starting to bleed together, creating the emergence of a new culture. We can be a part of it, or we can be relics. As libraries, I think we have a unique moral obligation to usher our communities into it.

Right…our users are the ones using some of the Web tools and sites we all are talking about. Look at what’s happening with sites like Yahoo 360 and MySpace. Maybe the boards and administrators need a good taste of some social software and some pondering time outside of the Worry Tank. Maybe they should also attend a gaming session at a library to see a little bit of the future.

哈哈, library 2.0题材越来越多了。看老槐的了!
Our patrons share their hopes and dreams and foibles and ambitions with us all the time, it may be time to give back, become more interactive and collaborative, make that door swing both ways. This is what Library 2.0 means to me.
