Pioneering research shows ‘Google Generation’ is a myth

A new study overturns the common assumption that the ‘Google Generation' – youngsters born or brought up in the Internet age – is the most web-literate. The first ever virtual longitudinal study carried out by the CIBER research team at University College London claims that, although young people demonstrate an apparent ease and familiarity with computers, they rely heavily on search engines, view rather than read and do not possess the critical and analytical skills to assess the information that they find on the web.

On being in bed with Google

One of the things that surprises me most about reactions to the Google Library Project is that smart people whom I respect seem to think that the only reason that a university library would be involved with Google is because, in some combination, its leadership is stupid, evil, or at best intellectually lazy. To the contrary, although I may be proved wrong, I believe that the University of Michigan (and the other partner libraries) and Google are changing the world for the better. Four years from now, all seven million volumes in the University of Michigan Libraries will have been digitized – the largest such library digitization project in history. Google Book Search and our own MBooks collection already provide full-text access to well over a hundred thousand public domain works, and make it possible to search for keywords and phrases within hundreds of thousands more in-copyright materials. This access is altering the way that we do research. At least as important, the project is itself an experiment in the provision and use of digitized print collections in large research libraries. I do not see how we can discover the best ways to use such collections without experiments at this scale. In sum, I believe that our library is doing exactly what it should do in the best interests of scholarship and our users, now and in the future.

If libraries were to suddenly develop a business plan for making money then we might one day make it to the competitors list. Until then, it would be beneficial to continue analysis of Google’s information tools and provide the type of guidance to information users that has been the mainstay of our field.

Big brother Google is tracking you ?
Did you realize when you are logged in with a free Google account and are searching the web with Google, your every click is being tracked? I learned this tonight thanks to a post by Kern Kelly. Apparently this tracking started in April 2007, or that was the month I started using a Google account through which my web searches and clicks on Google would be tracked. This is indicated by the fact that my monthly search activity was not recorded prior to April

Google's 'My library' - another Google trainwreck.

We've all got bunches of books, so the ability to quickly and easily add them to a 'My library' function has to be paramount. There are two ways you can do it with Google - you can either give them a bunch of ISBNs, or you can search through the Book Search function and add books using the 'Add to My Library' function. Well, I've got some books on the LibraryThing resource that I thought I'd add - it's about 180 varied titles. I exported the list, cut and pasted the ISBNs into the Google My Library import box and got it to add them. Except that it came back with the error that it couldn't add 64 titles. Did it tell me which 64 titles it didn't add? No of course it didn't - that would be much too helpful for Google wouldn't it, though to be accurate their engineers probably arn't capable of that level of coding. So about one third of titles didn't get added and the only way I could find out which would be to go through by hand. The other problem is that they all had acceptable ISBNs - as far as LibraryThing and Amazon were concerned, and quite frankly I'm going to trust them above Google anytime.

What they promised was "Pay Equity". And they promised that Library workers would be paid at the same rates as other Municipal workers at Victoria City Hall.

But today, more than ten years past the due date, they have still not delivered. Library workers are still paid substantially less than other local Municipal workers doing equivalent jobs.

Abram said librarians needed to have "alligator hides" to innovate, because of the sheer amount of negative feedback they will surely get. He warned of a "culture of victimization" in which librarians focus on low pay and library closings, rather than increased circulation and many well-compensated executives. Schneider pointed to the recent example in which the Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, traded the Dewey Decimal System for more bookstore-like headings at one branch, and was roundly criticized on some electronic mailing lists. Abram called librarians' response "one of the most appalling discussions," and an example of how trying something new that might benefit users drew a massive backlash in the profession. Schneider noted that having the room to try and fail would be lovely, but that it was hard to justify failure to academic administrations, governments, and those who hold the purse strings. "We need change the terms of success," she suggested.

This month’s announcement — focusing on 12 Midwestern research universities that make up the Committee on Institutional Cooperation and their special collections — will eventually add 10 million of the libraries’ most distinctive volumes.

It has been so successful with its sponsored links that, according to Pew Research, most searchers cannot tell the difference between an ad and a regular link. Google manages their primary client base, advertisers of all sizes, adeptly.

In Google we trust

This paper considers information safety and accuracy in the digital age using Google as an entry point. In doing so, it explores the role media play in shaping the relationship of information, privacy, and trust between Google and the public. This inquiry is undertaken using framing theory to guide a content analysis of the way Google is presented in New York Times articles from a two–year period ending in November, 2005. Analysis of the extensive coverage of Google’s share price and earnings reports leads to the conclusion that trust in Google is fostered in part simply by reports of its fiscal success. To the extent that this is true, meaningful public debate about information policies is inhibited.

So let American publishers sue to find out what "fair use" means. Doubtless the case will go to appeal; by the time it ends they, like music publishers before them, may experience a surge in demand for their books, especially those not readily available in bookshops. If, for example, someone searching on Google on a subject in which they are interested unexpectedly comes across a relevant book, reads a bit and orders a copy, one more book is sold, providing income to publisher and author and revenue for Google from contextual advertising. The search engine has undoubtedly been arrogant in having an opt-out rather than opt-in policy for the authors of the books it has scanned, but there is a strong public interest in bringing the millions of books lying fallow in libraries to the world's attention. A colleague was delighted to find that his copyrighted but out-of-print book was featured on Google Book Search, even though no one had asked his permission. Humankind is the winner.

Yahoo!

Now as a practical matter, of course, people often can’t classify the world for themselves, which is why we have the robust scholarship on classification. People choose proxies — intermediaries. Newspapers. Search engines. And librarians, among others. Supervision and scrutiny? Librarians are “open” about their methods in the sense that we can see and hear them do their work, but there is no librarian accountability. My thoughts wander — serendipitously, as it happens — to Rebecca Tushnet’s comment about ontology (”sentimental rubbish”), which is on point here. Is it really a problem that Google is so secret? How closely does the government scrutinize the newsgathering and sorting activities of the New York Times? CBS News? The Daily Show? boingboing? I’m struggling with my intuition that Google’s “secrecy” isn’t really all that different from other kinds of intermediary “secrecy.” I’m still not persuaded that the anti-Google argument doesn’t have “librarians are special” at its core. I’m happy to agree that librarians are special, but I don’t think that argument is enough to carry the day here.
