A whole new Web is emerging from the wilds of cyberspace. It's no longer all about idly surfing and passively reading, listening, or watching. It's about doing: sharing, socializing, collaborating, and, most of all, creating.

Finally, we predict we'll run into what we call the kitchen organization problem. While we all know where we've put the glasses and plates in our own kitchens, it takes only a trip to a friend's house to realize that not everyone organizes their kitchens the same way. Folksonomies and social networks make it easy to share, but if we all organize our own information with our own evolved structures, chaos is bound to emerge when these conflicting structures are merged on a massive scale.

Inherent Truths and Value of Community点击:101

At the end, the lesson is one of a paradox. As the power shifts increasingly towards community, the corporation loses its grip on the traditional means of control. Yet, by letting go of control, the corporation creates an environment where the community willingly creates its own switching costs.

For some, it means picking up a camera and supplying pictures and video to a local TV station. Others are going a step further, creating their own mini news organizations with pictures, news stories and video clips of events in their communities—anything from softball games to town-council meetings.

The advent of the Web 10 years ago opened up vast banks of information to anyone with an Internet connection. Now, clever programming tricks that use data from public Web sites are letting developers mix up that information to suit consumers' particular needs.

It’s this user-led approach, coupled with the fact that Craigslist refuses to use its considerable leverage to maximize profits, which seems to have worked in their favor. And aside from a few minor changes coming to a board near you, this dynamic duo isn’t planning on rewriting the playbook anytime soon. They’re sticking with what works.

The two keys are free markets and free speech. These are concepts about which conservatives and progressives agree. They are also essential to the peristence of the Net we love and understand as a place that's built to support both.

Me, maybe a lot of my motivation derives from the name of our site; I take things personally. Maybe sometime this year I can go part time as a customer service rep, and I could use a day off, maybe a Sunday. But I plan to be doing customer service forever.

No matter how hard I try, sometimes we screw up. Then we apologize and fix it. My lingering concern is that I'm missing something big, and that I need to hear about it from my team and the community. What am I missing?

The Rules of Podcasting点击:75

before I started out on my journey into the world of podcasting, I felt it was appropriate to set forth a few rules that I would abide by, and rules that other podcasters could embrace, like a newborn child crapping in the palm of your hand for the very first time. It’s glorious, isn’t it? Here you go.

This won't be the last time that we're hearing about citizen journalists. In fact, you can almost see them becoming a major component of all major news stories, especially ones like London. The media world is changing around us almost every day. And news organizations ignore ideas like citizen journalism at their own peril

Against the backdrop of world economic conditions, rising gas prices and adverse market news, technology has been steadily marching along and knowledge has been exploding. Access to technology, knowledge and human capital is greater and less expensive than ever before.
So in my view, there has never been a better time in the history of the world to start a new company.

For the time being, podcasting is a cipher, a technology that seems to further threaten established media's stranglehold on public consciousness, but offers little opportunity in the way of a real actual business. Big media are aggressively attempting to get their arms around the next big thing. But it remains elusive, a medium that is viral and uncontrollable by nature, and that does not threaten to become a business any time soon.

The media scene in China has been a rather remarkable one in the past five years. Titles and broadcasting channels have exploded in numbers, only matched by soaring revenue from ads, a market that grew last year 25 percent, much faster than the overall economy.
No wonder foreign media conglomerates have been watching the industry with a watering mouth, despite the occasional misgivings about government interference in the news industry.

Beijing has an uneven record of late in allowing citizens access to Google English News headlines giving Chinese searchers access to uncensored news from all over the world. According to Reporters Without Borders, China is censoring Google News to force Internet users to use the Chinese version of the site which has been purged of the most critical news reports.

One thing that can help at this stage in the expansion of the RSS space is further capital, deployed in a deliberate manner, to take the most promising of these ideas -- technologies in the family of tagging, RSS, OPML, search, social software, and related next-gen standards -- to market in a way that supports the emerging ecosystem. There are many such experimental technologies that could and should take the next steps forward.

The growing popularity of blogs and citizen journalism is only increasing as inventive citizens collaborate on news ideas to improve their offerings, buoyed by a fertile environment of low barrier costs and a healthy growth rate for online advertisers. Fact is that the politicization of cyberspace is a given. Does it mean that blogs need to be fair and balanced? You should ask the same of certain television networks. Just like any other media, Internet blogs are going to spin accordingly. Ranting about political jihads is a dodge when the important news is how they figure in the larger political debate.

When I left, I said I had three questions I hoped to answer during my visit. They were: Is intellectual property really respected in modern China? Do peer review and free scholarly debate, as they are understood in the West, exist? And Could China become the dominant source of innovative technologies and scientific discovery in the 21st century?
