the trackback function is indispensable for weaving the blogosphere - and use it a lot. With blog-software like WordPress trackback spamming - hopefully - is not a major problem; trackbacks like comments can be set to “moderate”, just as Chetan explains, and I have no inhibition to use the moderating function and delete a trackback that is clearly spam.
It is true that even with the blogs I regularly visit I very often find the trackback function non-existent or disabled; I really find that deplorable; in my view trackbacking is one major part of the fun in blogging. On reading other blogs usually I find trackbacks at least as interesting as on-site comments, as they provide hyperlinks to move on with.

Trackbacks do work and you can get them to work by moderation (the keyword here) in light of excessive spam. Trackbacks need not be instantaneous. If the site owner receiving the trackback feels it appropriate and relevant to her post, she can then moderate to include it as part of the feedback. Trackbacks should be left to the discretion of the owner if she'd like to list that in her own trackback section, just like the comments. Most serious bloggers do take praise and criticism in the same breath, so this isn't a problem.

It has been killed by spam and by spammers - by the sheer horror of ping after ping pushing mother/son incest and bestiality links. It has been killed by the exploitation of human beings quite prepared to desecrate the work of tens of thousands of people in order that they should scrabble together a few coins. It has been killed by the experience of an inbox overwhelmed by the automated rape of our creative endeavours.
