新開的酒店聘請服務員四名,全是大學畢業生。另有一位如校花,在酒店門外替客人開車門,每天站立九小時,大學畢業,她說很喜歡這份工作,因為可以「由低做起,打好根基」。
不錯,吃得苦中苦,確是一項美德。然而話又說回來,念完工管、美術史、英國文學,畢業之後做服務員,那麼讀大學來做甚麼?
讀完大學,進社會工作,由低做起,一點不是問題。香港女作家林燕妮在柏克萊畢業,自由黨的周梁淑怡讀完倫敦皇家戲劇學院,回到香港,由低做起,在電視台先擔任天氣女郎。
由低做起,是這個意思。林女士和周太太,畢業後由低做起,沒有到士多去搬運汽水,也不必到雜貨店去托大米,因為這些工作,雖然也能磨練意志,由大學生來做,在一個正常的社會,是人力資源的浪費。
在廚房當洗碗工、在酒館做侍應,在會考完畢和大學放暑假的時候做好了。賺點零用錢,客人嘲罵幾句,醉酒鬼迎面打一拳,體會世間的辛酸,人生的荒涼。然而這一切是中途站:佐敦、油麻地、旺角,浮塵過眼,目的地是經九龍塘轉車後的羅湖。
雖然羅湖離開北京,還有兩千公里,但想去北京,羅湖才是起點。大學畢業了,認清自己的立足點在哪裏。在羅湖交出證件,整頓行李,從這裏起步,羅湖跟油麻地不同是不是。
然而畢業之後當開門的侍應,無論多麼短暫,隱隱有一點不妥。不錯,開車門,說一聲早安,彬彬有禮,是品格的根基,但這個根基要到大學畢業後才學習怎樣打好,是不是太遲呢?大學畢業生,「由低做起,打好根基,迎接挑戰」,當一個開車門的女侍應,以為這是品格的磨練,是一種似是而非的Fuzzy Logic。你相信了,酒店的老闆和改善經濟無能的政府最喜歡。
因為大學學位多而濫,因為許多大老闆還是留戀消費泡沫,沒有改投資高科技,還是相信旅遊、飲食、消費是這個城市的泡沫基礎,因為玩這些行業對他最容易。一個大學生化系的理學士畢業了,從低做起,應該是到實驗室去當一個助理,而不是去開計程車。而那些人卻說:美國也是這樣的,街上的的士司機許多是博士。如果你那麼崇美,Well,我沒有異議。但是這個世界,許多「搵老襯」的事情都用一層「哲理」來包裝,例如這句話,叫做由低做起。

什麼想法
生得靚等被包?你估拍粵語殘片嗎?生得樣好幾時都著數, 呢個係常識, 小朋友趣緻啲, 生日禮物都多啲大啲, 先有討好的第一印象, 加上醒目同運氣, 發展好過長相平庸的人是很正常. I don't deny that there are gals 恃靚行兇或sleep the way to top, 但不可以有這個假設吧.
人地都係大學生
只係唔係讀正旅遊酒店系,做得一兩年,轉做大堂唔得咩,再過一兩年做A.M.囉. 據我所知酒店業就算紅褲子都要識house keeping, 老麥M.T.要洗厠所添,做人腳踏實地有mut唔好? 你想一畢業做G.M.咩, 讀Master都唔見得有幾高至喎.

如果佢讀果科, 又真係响番果行發展, 咁初期做下d低職位都算講得過既. 不過我prefer 做M.T.囉. 一來真係有得畀你"由低做起", 但又真係有得畀你升.(老麥另計 - 不嬲都係揾笨架LA)

總是不肯由一個比較低姿態的方式(例如為他人抱不平)立論,總是要將那些想法表現為自己的醒目。不過,這次總算是說了一句比較公道的話。

i am not totally disagree with cho. the employment of u grad for the job of bell-boy does seem to be a waste of resources, but my point is as this the choice of the young lady, who is in the position to query?
Wasting time is not 腳踏實地
I can tell you that such a position provides no opportunity to learn at all, and even after ten years, you can't be promoted, as it goes to nowhere after this post. If you tell me she is working as a front desk operator or even a waitress, at least she can learn and get promoted. No one can be an AM within five, six years in a hotel in HK these days, even for our classmates. They ask for relevant experiences (at least two, three years) when giving the title of only a 'supervisor', and if you start as a bell-boy (or girl), there will never be 'relevant experience' gained.
To start from the bottom is to start from an operational position, but not from a place where you learn nothing while at the same time getting the post from somebody who has weaker education background than you do.
By the way, I have worked in housekeeping as well, believe it or not. It is not like I don't know what is reality. In fact, whether appearance is important or not, the starting point dictates your future for the next five, ten years at least. If she was graduated from Hotel/Tourism Man., she should have applied for Management Trainee positions already. In fact, such positions are also entitled to fresh graduates from any domain, just comp0aring with those offers, I see no point one can learn anything from a 'vase position'. A vase can only remain to be a vase, forever, until it is no longer eligible.
No one asks to be a GM (except the children of the owners) immediately, just the phenomenon stated is really unhealthy.

另,酒店業升職會唔會都係好講人事?
