Counter-Strike: WSVG 2006 Finals Wrapup

By: AJ Francis - Published December 13, 2006 at 2:12 AM EST - Writer Archive
Ten of the top teams in the Counter-Strike world faced off to battle in New York for the WSVG title, $50,000, and some "bling bling" rolex watches. The weekend gave us some classic matches paired with a few uncharacteristic blowouts, living up to the claim made by Dave ’moto’ Geffon that the WSVG Finals was the most competitive event our young sport had ever seen.

The tournament threw a lot of its viewers for a curve, from the top to the bottom of the bracket. So many unexpected outcomes and unanticipated stars remind us all of how "up in the air" our sport still is. Any given day, any given team can win. All it takes is the desire and dedication to put it together, and you have yourself the winning formula; as seen this past weekend.

MVP of the Tournament:

Jan “mooN” Stolle - ALTERNATE aTTaX was counted out by most of the community from the beginning. Thanks to stellar play by mooN and roman, aTTaX amounted up into one of the greatest upsets our sport has been graced with. MooN’s uncanny and almost sixth sense-like gameplay, led his team to the promise land, and himself to the MVP award. Statistically, mooN was the best player at the event and it showed, leading his team to the title.

Top 5 Performers at WSVG Finals:

1.) Hoang “s0nNy” Tran * Pandemic - Hoang led Pandemic to two huge international wins, finally getting the inaugural ’monkey off Pandemic’s back’ for international play. From pushing his team to victory with a 30 frag half on de_train over hacker, to his countless entry frags, s0nNy is truly becoming one of the great American CS players in the scene.

2.) Roman “roman” Ausserdorfer * ALTERNATE aTTaX - Roman had some of the nicest frags of the whole tournament. His sheer skill and aim were unmatched by the opposing teams this weekend as he plowed through opponent after opponent on his way to a +19 K/D ratio and 84.2 DAR.

3.) Ron “Rambo” Kim * Team3D - Kim held 3D together in the early rounds, especially in the demolishing of Fnatic on de_dust2. While Rambo’s stats were a mediocre +7 K/D ratio and 76 DAR, he consistently stepped up when it counted, clutching round after round when he was needed. His consistent middle to top of the scoreboard fragging helped 3D to a solid and respectable second place finish amongst the world’s elite.

4.) Griffin “shaGuar” Benger * Team3D - Benger, much like Rambo, clutched a few key rounds, along with leading 3D’s K/D ratio at +20. He shared the top spot in FPR with method at .757. Not only was his play consistent and solid, he gave us some great AWP shots as well.

5.) Patrik “f0rest” Lindberg * Fnatic - Fnatic’s leading fragger, along with highest DAR and FPR, f0rest proved he was still to be considered one of the best in the world. His M4 / AK action was something to be remembered.
