.The Referrers System lets you list the sites that sent visitors from their page to your page. Though similar to services such as the ones described on Disenchanted, this service allows you to create the list of referrers using a single JavaScript command.
This is a free service. Actual referrer data is hosted on my site, though if you don't like that you can download the script [last upgraded September 5, 2002, current version 1.001] from this page and install it yourself.
Try the Referrer System on your website
To try this out, place the following chunk of Javascript on your web page where you want the list of referrers to show up. You do not need to change it at all. I recommend placing it at the bottom of the page so it loads last.
<script language="Javascript" src="http://www.downes.ca/referrers.js"></script>
Download and install referrer script yourself
For those of you who do not want your referral data being sent to my website, the referral scipts are also provided. Download these scripts and install them on your own system. They are available free under GPL (and if you come up with fixes, etc., please send me a note). Use the right-click to download: referrers.js referrers.txt
Put these scripts on your website. Change the name of referrers.txt to referrers.cgi and chmod to 775. Edit referrers.js to point to referrers.cgi. Edit referrers.cgi to specify your data directory and home URL (so you don't log self referrals).
Then, instead of the javascript described above, change it so it points to the location of referrers.js on your own site. And you're done!
Who Else is Using this Script?
I don't record downloads and installations (though if you do download it and get it running, it would be nice if you sent me a note so I could advise you of upgrades). Sites and pages using the referral script through my server are listed here.
Changes, Upgrades, Etc.
I post change upgrade and change information in the discussion below. When a change is made, a link will appear in your referrer list (assuming you are using my script, not one you downloaded and installed yourself) linking directly to the post.
Below is the discussion thread related to this article (you can syndicate any of my discussions on your page using a simple Javascript command; click here for more information).
