New Digg Comment System Released!
diggtheblog.blogspot.com — Now each digg user has the ability to rate their favorite comments by digging them. If you see an off-topic comment, simply click the bury icon to shrink and remove the comment from view. Other new features include: threading, editing, and friend flags.
- 4546 diggs
- digg it
- RCHILD, on 10/12/2007, -186/+73Yeah it seem like they just updated this right now, pretty cool. Lupe Fiasco
- awfulshot, on 10/12/2007, -333/+40i dont see the need to post a digg for this, anyone who looks at any digg will realise this.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -79/+32It's so people can comment on it?
- stalgia, on 10/12/2007, -66/+20hot diggity dam
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -77/+13THERE IS A DAMN TIMING BUG ON THIS SYSTEM! CHECK IT OUT KEVIN. I STILL HAVE 28000 seconds TO EDIT THIS
- Kev585, on 10/12/2007, -69/+294Someone beat you to it kevin
http://digg.com/technology/New_comment_system_#c1141690
Though they dugg to google.- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -17/+35I love that we can post to individual comments. But cant that lead to fights for the top of the page? ending in a less liner flow? or is there a limit to the replies to each post? Just a thought. Love it to heck anyway!
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -17/+34Yep there's a limit, the first comment has just filled up.
One suggestion: our friends comments turn green so why don't our own posts turn a different kind of color? Please add this as a now have a harder time finding my posts (too small of an icon). - ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -33/+11Actually my bad! it hasn't filled up. No Limit.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23One level depth does not a threaded discussion make. I think that is actually more conducive to flamewars than full threading...
Bug reports:
1) It took like almost a minute for this page to load under Safari on my 2.5Ghz Dual G5. I should be able to program a limit on how long a page should be, and comments should be multiple pages if that length is exceeded.
2) When I hit "Reply", nothing happens. I figured out I should probably scroll to the bottom of the page. Using a # anchor to jump to the bottom of the page probably isn't where it's at anyway. You should probably DOM in a new div for the textarea + buttons right where I'm hitting the reply link, not scroll the browser around madly so I can no longer see what I was reading. - ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Yeah more levels to threading sound like a good idea.
ThePhilomath's Suggestions:
1) color the user's own comments
2) allow for at least three levels to threading
3) when a story is buried, and we click "show comment", it can't be hidden again. It should be able to be hidden.
4) I think an add friend button would be a great idea, right on the comment bar.
5) Ability to rank entire threads by diggs, ranking only by diggs breaks meaning a lot of the time.
Besides that, Great job guys! Any more suggestions? - ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I also like tobey's idea:
6) "One thing that would be cool though, is when you reply to a comment, the box that you type in (what the hell do you even call it??) should appear under the comment you're replying to instead of being at the bottom of the page." - ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -19/+107) The ability to delete comments
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -9/+98) "i hope there'll be a stat server that keeps score of each user's "average comment rating." our score could be placed in our profile and/or maybe even next to our name (like how the amount of front page stories is now)." -foxhoundadmin
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -5/+119) If all comments in a thread are buried and the original post is buried, then the replies should be hidden below the threshold of the original post (see the first thread in this article). So all of the replies are hidden so that I can ignore the entire thread and move on to the more valuable threads (there's too many grey comments!).
- illegal_op, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3http://www.leve1.com also beat you to it. almost the same commenting system.
- chataholicdan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+810) Errr the ability to choose a default threshold setting sitewide, should one wish to keep the same.
- spling, on 10/12/2007, -230/+38Dupe and reported as such
- Legato, on 10/12/2007, -91/+6haha! it was a joke i know, but now i can FIX THE PROBLEM!!!
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -26/+23^ (spling)
Will this be the first comment to reach -100 diggs? Woohoo! Your dupe alert might make digg history! - Cryobat, on 10/12/2007, -11/+51It seems like we have a slight bug on Safari though... See image here: http://brutus.ih.nu/~sebjma/temp/diggbug.png
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -18/+7That is hilarious.
- spling, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5"^ (spling)
Will this be the first comment to reach -100 diggs? Woohoo! Your dupe alert might make digg history!"
That would be neat. =D - jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yeah, its not very safari compatable. Im hoping firefox 2.0 has RSS CSS built in so i can dump safari. I love safari but i would willingly switch to firefox if i could roll my RSS feeds natively.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -50/+21Haha I beat Kevin to it.
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Roger I dugg your story too... I think it's a shame you don't get the cred for posting this first, but Kevin's got way more people looking at his posts than you do. :-)
Kevin Rose = Big Fish in the Digg Pond
Roger = Smaller Fish in the Digg Pond
Way to go though...
- tetfsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Roger I dugg your story too... I think it's a shame you don't get the cred for posting this first, but Kevin's got way more people looking at his posts than you do. :-)
- ppflea, on 10/12/2007, -52/+5awesome_broso!
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -33/+93Kevin Rose, who was your insider on this one? I just saw the new comments get implemented, and yet you ALREADY HAD THE STORY UP. Something sounds sneakily suspicious here.
And for those of you who tend to miss these types of things (there always are!)... that was a joke. :)
Looking great so far! Finally... usable comments. Ooh, though the edit box shrinks realllly small.- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -82/+15dUdE your such a n00b k-rose is liek teh h4xor lol he liek pwns digg LoL nub.
For those of you who miss those kinds of things, that was also a joke. (Just testing out the individual reply thingy) BTW Apparently this comment is editable for 26078 Seconds...- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -20/+32I LOVE the ability to target individual comments now. This is great. :)
Yes, I hit that weird seconds bug, except mine was in the two millions. Bound to be some bugs initially, eh? :)
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -20/+32I LOVE the ability to target individual comments now. This is great. :)
- arrrrrg, on 10/12/2007, -13/+23Too much power in the hands of a few. Slashdot has been through this. Better to let a small proportion of accounts have their votes actually count on a given day, so that many fakes are needed to affect the ratings. Of course, one can get even more sophisticated (metamoderation, etc.).
- neofactor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If you select Show Comment... There is No way to hide it again.. unless you refresh the page.
Also... seems there is a limit to the number of replies allowed... or at least there is no reply on all threads. - MrCalifornia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8How's this thread get a 3rd level?
- ThePhilomath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The third level was disabled early on in this post, as you can see.
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -82/+15dUdE your such a n00b k-rose is liek teh h4xor lol he liek pwns digg LoL nub.
- AverageJoe, on 10/12/2007, -38/+94Beautiful... simply beautiful... joygasm!
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Joygasm"
that is the funniest thing I have seen today, and it's 10:50PM where I am when I post this. - theDrizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1since we are using made up words...gotta throw in "scrumtralescent"
...i hope you all know where that comes from
- rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Joygasm"
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -10/+43the new look is awesome! much cleaner! i also love the ability to edit and to easily rate comments (along with all the other improvements), its great!
kevin: i'm updating this to let you know that there may be a bug. it said "available for: 28500 seconds".- Iced_Eagle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Woohoo new comment system! :)
*Edit* Test of edit.
- Iced_Eagle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Woohoo new comment system! :)
- Software2, on 10/12/2007, -21/+54When I expand comments below the viewing threshold is causes IE7 beta to crash...
And it's the first time I've ever crashed in IE7. Thanks!- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -29/+39it's IE7, what do you expect? i think it would make more sense for you to send a bug report to microsoft, not digg.
- concept10, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Now we are able to digg-up insightful and useful comments and filter the hey dude, thats freakin cool! comments
- jak119, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4two things, get firefox and i like the new system of comments
- maverick001, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3test test
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -29/+39it's IE7, what do you expect? i think it would make more sense for you to send a bug report to microsoft, not digg.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52This is wonderful. It will definitly make it harder for people to abuse the comment rating system like they did before. Or at least when they do it now, it won't go un-noticed.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25One thing that would be cool though, is when you reply to a comment, the box that you type in (what the hell do you even call it??) should appear under the comment you're replying to instead of being at the bottom of the page.
You know, kind of like it does when you edit your comment? Just a thought. - dergachev, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3Test reply edited
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't wanna be a putz, but my immediate observation is, the second anyone posts a negative commnet, or something in oposition to the party line, it goes -1 and isn't visible unless anyone clicks show comment. I guess my point is the comment is lost forever on one two person's actions... i dunno maybe i just don't understand the sytem, here hoping people aren't generaly mean and it will work for the best.. and hopefully can the fanboism that was rampant before, no one likes to read the pointless flame posts.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25One thing that would be cool though, is when you reply to a comment, the box that you type in (what the hell do you even call it??) should appear under the comment you're replying to instead of being at the bottom of the page.
- Alabama, on 10/12/2007, -25/+17very nice comment system
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8This is really neat! me likey!
- tarun, on 10/12/2007, -67/+5Let us try it.
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -25/+14great work!
- stoops, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1test
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -24/+8Wonderful!
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -24/+13I love this so much.
- zenzo, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5awesome, I was banging my head on a wall less than 60 seconds ago because I could not post a comment and here you go making me feel stupid for being angry about it.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -133/+8I just want you to know that you all suck unless you Digg my comments!!! Now Digg me, jerkfaces!
- briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4We dugg you, just not the way you expected.
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27Great improvement! Spell checking for the edit box would be nice though, but I'm not complaining.
- cadpo76, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Just use Google Toolbar's spellcheck. It works on any form on a page.
- encryptz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Use the Mozilla Spellcheck Libraries and Spellbound with Firefox. It works with any text input.
BTW- the new comment system is great! Finally, I can filter out all the noise that litters the comments. - spinxter, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3^cadpo76: Google Toolbar is evil and you shouldn't encourage people to use it.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -15/+11wow very nice guys feels like a new site all over again
w00t editing is so simple now ! - Steaminx, on 10/12/2007, -21/+2This is dope
- Samus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+10w00t, it looks like slashot, now i feel more at home :) (5 mins edit would be nicer though)
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -26/+138goodbye slashdot. thanks for the good times. may you rest in peace.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -24/+13let's have a funeral =)
- Klutometis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I would have agreed with you about two hours ago; now, however, that threading has been reduced to one-deep, convo is impossible.
- mcduckov, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Actually this is more of a baby-step for functionality and a giant leap for neeto commenting technology. Do you see the difference?
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -26/+138goodbye slashdot. thanks for the good times. may you rest in peace.
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Cool
- SuperMo0, on 10/12/2007, -22/+7How many comments do you think will end up with -100 diggs as people go to THIS ARTICLE to test this out?
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Heh, lots
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -10/+10I'm loving the sorting feature! Thanks, digg team.
- digid, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18looks great... makes me very happy I can finally reply to individual comments. The comment digging looks sweet too. I just hope it isn't abused to the point great comments get filtered by trolls and special interest censors.
- victoria06, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Great :)
- chrisgac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14While this comment system is great, I don't think it'll take over Slashdot until we get unlimited replies working. I know Kevin has said he doesn't want a big conversation type comments section, but there are way to implement a unlimited replies system and still have a clean looking comments page and keep rating and flaming to a minimum.
I say have a limited number of reply levels, say four, that would be visible on the comment page. You could also set a maximum number of posts per level, e.g. 5 first levels, 10 second levels. After limits are reached, there would be a [read more] button that would take you to a comments page in under the user page of the digger who submitted the root comment.
Thus we have all the benefits of a unlimited comment system a la slashdot, but cleaner, more consise and easier to read over if you don't find it interesting. That should be digg in a nutshell: easier, cleaner, more consise.
I encourge any and all replies. - rysolag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chris I don't think we can reply to your post. Do you really think anyone out there is going to listen to what you say?
- alex.will, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12Awesome guys, great combination of form and function.
*Hehe edited!- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Testing the reply function, and it's pretty cool.
- poutine, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0nice
- marquis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Yes, its pretty cool (also testing). wow!
This line was edited. Man, this is the best comment system in the internet. However, it'd be cool if the edit box for replies would appear directly below the commented-on comment. Keep it up!
- Atombomb, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2nice upgrade
- munkt0n, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6ergh, what's next? times new roman typeface?
- fsmdave, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10Cool system! Thanks digg people.
I am, however, experiencing some teething problems. I'm using FF1.07 and everytime the edit timer changes the rhs google ads flash up on the top lhs. The "Who Dugg This?" bar from below the Add Your Comment box also appears between the line "Add Your Comment" and the comment box.- damagu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4This is happening to me too.
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Go use 1.5 idiot
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10I do like the increased Friend integration as well. Excellent.
- liquidjill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1agreed, I suppose it is finally time for me to get started on my friends list.. I've only been around here for a couple of months but it's amazing how far digg has come. Well done.
- scotty588, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Very nice. I like it. Great job.
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Awesome, I love it!
- canucksin2006, on 10/12/2007, -12/+4Really like the editing system. +digg as everyone would say.
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1yep
- bantam, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1yep
- stosh, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4This looks really busy right now...lots of little icons. I don't like how it looks but I like the fuctionality.
- cloud525, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Wicked Cool :)
Far Slicker than /.
Although the seconds counter seems to cause some flicker under the (old) Firefox 1.0.7
Much better aethetics and functionality than /. ... - Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Good work.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2NICE
- droxy429, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2me like
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14"This looks really busy right now...lots of little icons. I don't like how it looks but I like the fuctionality."
That's what everyone said about Digg 2.0 when they released it. It'll grow on you.- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -16/+8yeah you are right it works well but it looks like dog *****.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4yeah so true i think this is so easy and less convoluted then /.
sowwy /. =(
w00t threaded!- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3just a test to see what happens when u reply to a reply.
- Laurentvw, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Same here, just testing the threaded comments-feature. Hope you don't mind :)
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4how many replies can it handle? (be careful - please don't break it!)
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3just a test to see what happens when u reply to a reply.
- darb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7I think we don't have to do "..." anymore :P
Now we can reply directly under the person!
Sweet. ... slow to load for me though, and Im on 3MB connection.
Anyone else experience slow load for the comments?
- Auronius, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Surpasses the old system by a mile.
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11I am very sorry but i dont like they way it looks visualy. The idea is there but all the information is clutered and hard to read.
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree. It's a *very* good start (and a huge improvement over what was there before), but I feel a little claustrophobic. Can it maybe be spread out just a bit?
Also, I liked the idea of having multiple ratings, also (rate up or down more than one point for how good/bad a comment was).
I agree with others on the restricted use of HTML tags.
Oh, and I just now noticed that I can update my responses! Sweet!
- senfo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree. It's a *very* good start (and a huge improvement over what was there before), but I feel a little claustrophobic. Can it maybe be spread out just a bit?
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3this is schmexay
gee thanks Kevin for telling me 2am at the Apple Store lol...I wanted to be the first one to use the new comment system haha
but still, kickass update...lovin it - mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Beautiful, but when you chose to hide or show the comments, the transition is slightly laggy for me. Maybe its my ram but I'm not quite sure.
I used to like the space between the comments, but now it seems a bit crowded and cramped, although i like the new look. Great work kevin.- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Everything's smooth as butter for me.
- aos101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yeah I'd prefer if it was slightly quicker when you click show comment.
Edit: Yeah, the editing works :) - mad23dog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I agree the transition is a bit laggy, but I think that can be expected with a brand new feature.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15very nice, though there are a few bugs in ie.
if they could add in the ability to 'tag' a post (similar to /. -- like funny, spam or whatever) that would be great too.
probably the only part of digg that i like (visually). ;)- Smily, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Yeah tagging a comment would be nice too :)
- cheese06, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10i have one small complaint, when you click "show comment" for the ones that have negative diggs, don't you think it takes a bit too long for it to slide down so it can be seen?
- bertdevriese, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Goodbye Slashdot!
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11i like the new digg/bury comments' feature. it kinda gives digg the same feeling you get at redvsblue's forums. very nice. now that comments have a rating system, i hope there'll be a stat server that keeps score of each user's "average comment rating." our score could be placed in our profile and/or maybe even next to our name (like how the amount of front page stories is now).
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7good idea, and they could expand upon it even more, like if a user gets a certain [low] 'ranking' they could have their account reviewed, and decide whether to give them a warning, or ban them, but this would mean we would need 'moderators' of sort and so on.
- lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12The other cool thing about this system is that I now know that kevinrose dugg one of my comments above. I've been in contact with Kevin Rose, albeit in a roundabout way! Life is great.
There are a few strange bugs that I've seen crop up already though (Safari on OS X). One was when there's a comment under my threshold and I click to show it, the box slides down, appropriately enough, but when it finishes sliding down, the [reply] link jumps up to the top of the box and partially covers the bury/digg buttons. Kind of annoying, but still slightly useable. The other one I've run into is I tried to reply to a post above - foxhoundadmin's post about a stats section for user profiles (which I strongly support because I love mindless stats like that!) - but when I clicked [reply] it didn't do anything. Oddly enough, every other [reply] button I hit worked fine. This is after refreshes and everything, too. Strange. But I have complete faith that these bugs will be ironed out in time. It's working great thus far... THANKS to everyone at Digg! :)
[EDIT] Wow... disregard my second bug (sort of), as it correctly put my comment where I wanted it. But it still is slightly a bug, since it didn't show that I'd be replying to this in my original reply box. Strange.
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15My only complaint is that once you "undigg" a comment and refresh, then show comment, you can't collapse it again. A little picky, yes, but it would still be handy to have a button that just hides the comment without changing the comment rating.
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Exactly what I was thinking too. Needs to be a way to re-collapse comments. Or even, just a collapse button/link for any comments, regardless of bury/digg rating.
Edit: Just noticed that it only gives you a few hundred seconds to edit the comments, very nice! If there was not a timer people would change thier comments all the time to make them selfs look good. :S Again, great job on the new comment system! Only thing it could use more is a colapse button to accompany the expand one!
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Exactly what I was thinking too. Needs to be a way to re-collapse comments. Or even, just a collapse button/link for any comments, regardless of bury/digg rating.
- wheremyarm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30The absolute first thing I noticed was how many comments on each page were "buried." It kind of seems like this is getting abused already. But I'd also like to see comments that have maybe +5 get turned a different color? Make it easier for the good ones to be identified.
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I agree. comments with at least 5 negative diggs should be buried by default if the user hasn'd dugg yet...
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Agreed big time on the color. It doesn't have to be a drastic color, just maybe something a little bolder perhaps.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Not really. Most of the buried comments are "Wow, this is cool" comments.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1A good idea is a good idea.
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -9/+47I buried a comment then clicked on "show comment". Is there a way to hide it again?
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12No, there isnt. I share the same frustration.
- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4nope not yet =/
- timewarrior, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5+digg for that comment
- kevinrose, on 10/12/2007, -16/+95coming soon...
- fsmdave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Refreshing the screen works for me.
- darb, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Just hit the thumbs down. It'll disappear, and -digg it.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I was thinking the same thing. There should also (maybe) be a way to change or undo your rating of a comment.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yeah, you should be able to hide coments without undigging them;
also, you should be able to change your vote, if you digg something you should be able to remove your dig, and then bury it. (an example of why, might be the post about being able to dig multiple times) - zone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think I broke it.. I clicked on "show comment" and now I can't rate anyother comment. (havent f5 yet)
edit: (f5) now it works again.. i dunno if was that or because i was testing the multiple diggs thing.. - Beautyon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2We need a way to expand and collapse entire threads, so that the parents of a dug comment can be viewed. Its often that a greate set of rebuttal(s) are given plus and its parent minus, making the parents dissapear and breaking the thread...you know what that looks like....'Recursive Digg' It's Superb!
